NAREE has announced a new award for its 70th Annual Real Estate Journalism Competition — the Kenneth R. Harney Award for Best Real Estate Consumer Education Reporting. The award winner will receive a $1,000 cash award and a certificate of excellence. The winner also will be invited to speak about the award-winning entry at NAREE’s Annual Real Estate Conference in Miami as NAREE’s guest. NAREE’s Miami 2020 conference will run June 24 to 27 at the Kimpton Epic Hotel.
Entries for the Harney Award will be judged on dogged, original enterprise reporting on current real estate policy and practices impacting the consumer – including mortgage finance, real estate brokerage, housing affordability, discrimination and other watchdog issues.
The award is named in honor of the late Ken Harney, whose nationally syndicated column, “The Nation's Housing," explored issues faced by homeowners and home buyers for more than 40 years. Ken Harney was NAREE’s 2008 president. The Harney family is funding this award in his honor.
"Last May when nationally syndicated real estate columnist Kenneth R. Harney died, readers lost a strong consumer watchdog and NAREE members lost a long-time role model and friend.
Now NAREE is attempting to continue Ken’s legacy through a new award in his memory,” said NAREE 2018 president Dion Haynes, Washington Post Real Estate Editor who spearheaded efforts to create the Harney award for this year’s competition.
“The idea for an award to promote the kind of consumer-oriented real estate reporting that Ken did his whole career was his,” said Ken’s wife Andy Leon Harney. “We as a family just helped flesh out what that would look like. We are hoping that the award will be an incentive for real estate reporters to continue his legacy.”
NAREE’s Harney Award will be one of the top honors in NAREE’s journalism competition. To qualify and compete, entrants must be bona fide, independent real estate journalists working for bona fide independent media as defined by NAREE.
All NAREE Real Estate Journalism Competition entries must be published or posted by December 31, 2019. March 1 is the competition entry deadline. Submit entries for all categories in NAREE’s competition on www.naree.org/jcontest.
AWARD PRESENTATION
All NAREE competition awards, including the Harney Award, will be presented at NAREE’s Annual Real Estate Journalism Conference on Friday, June 26 in Miami.
Categories for individual reporters include Best Collection of Work and Best Column. Categories for individuals or teams include Best Investigative Report and Best Series. Categories for editors include Best Real Estate or Home Section and Best Web Site.
NAREE will also award another $1,000 prize for the Best Overall Individual Entry chosen from categories recognizing individual reporting on commercial and residential real estate trends and tractions and urban, home and interior design. The winner of NAREE's Best Freelance Collection Award will received a $500 prize and the Best Young Journalist Winner (30 years or younger by Dec. 31, 2019) will receive a $250 award.
NAREE’s 54th Annual Competition entries will be judged by faculty of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. Entries in categories 1 through 31 will be judged on:
• Clarity of Writing
• Objectivity
• Originality
• Depth of Reporting
• Design (if applicable)
