NAREE Announces 12th Bruss Real Estate Book Award Winners in Austin
Austin – (June 28, 2019) The National Association of Real Estate Editors (NAREE) has named the winners of the 12th Annual Robert Bruss Real Estate Book Awards Competition. The awards recognize excellence in books published in 2018 covering the broad field of real estate. NAREE president Beth DeCarbo, Wall Street Journal, columnist, presented the awards at a luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Austin during NAREE's 53rd annual real estate journalism conference.
Authors Stefan Swanepoel and Paul Hagey, who wrote, "2019 Swanepoel Trends Report,” published by T3 Sixty, won the top honors, NAREE's Gold Award.
Judges' comments: “An interesting book about the latest industry disruptors,” said one judge. Another said, “Appeals to brokerage leaders who shape their firms’ business plans. For the rest of us who might want to know, say, how Realtors get paid and why they’re so loyal to some firms, this book has answers.”
Dave Van Horn took NAREE's Silver Award for his book, "Real Estate Note Investing" – BiggerPockets Publishing.
Judges' comments: “Goes beyond the usual real estate investing topics, to an advanced level for serious real estate investors,” commented one judge, while another said, “His tutorial is mesmerizing – beautifully written, quite convincing.”
The Bronze Award went to Doug Marshall, CCIM, for "Mastering the Art of Commercial Real Estate Investing: How to Successfully Build Wealth & Grow Passive Income from Your Rental Properties” – Morgan James Publishing.
Judges' comment: “Solid style. Author comes across as trustworthy and informed.”
Winner of the Leigh Robinson First-time Author Award was Alice Devine for “Suite Deal, The Smart Landlord’s Guide to Leasing Real Estate” – Learn Associates Publishing.
Judges' comment: ”Tightly focused and hits the target. Terrific tips, large and small, that would benefit any leasing agent.”
NAREE's esteemed panel of judges has many decades of experience as editors. Allen Norwood is a freelance writer and former editor of the Charlotte Observer. Christina Farnsworth, Cantadora, is a freelance journalist and former senior editor of both Builder and Professional Builder magazines. June Fletcher, is an author and retired journalist who worked for Naples Daily News, The Wall Street Journal and Builder magazine.
NAREE's Bruss Book Awards program is named for the late Robert Bruss, syndicated real estate columnist, prolific writer, and longtime NAREE leader. Bruss, who died in 2007, frequently wrote reviews of realty books. The Bruss Book Awards are sponsored by NAREE past presidents the late Leigh Robinson, founder of Express Publishing and author of "Landlording," and Brad Inman, founder of Inman News.
NAREE, a nonprofit association celebrating 90 years of service to real estate writers, was founded in 1929.

Awards for NAREE's 12th Annual Bruss Book Competition will be presented Friday, June 28, 2019 at NAREE's Austin Conference at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in the Foothills Two room on the 17th floor. A press release of winner names will be posted below and in association headlines after the awards.

NAREE Bruss Book Contest Entry Deadline Is April 15
|The National Association of Real Estate Editors' 12th Annual Robert Bruss Book Awards program is open to all authors who have written hard cover and paperback books, and e-books on topics in the broad field of real estate. Books about home buying and selling, mixed-used development, finance, mortgage lending, green building, architecture, international real estate and many other real estate-related topics are eligible. Entry deadline is April 15.
Past winners have included journalists, thought-leaders from academia, design world visionaries, real estate economists and real estate educators. Authors of real estate books can enter if their books were published – either in print or digitally – in 2018.

NAREE's Book Awards are named for the late Bob Bruss, syndicated real estate columnist, prolific writer, and longtime NAREE leader and mentor who enjoyed reviewing real estate books and was instrumental in building association membership for many years.
The awards program was created to recognize the excellence manifested in the work of real estate authors on an annual basis. Books focusing on the broad field of real estate including mortgage finance; home buying and selling; the business of real estate, government housing policy, green building, urban design, investing, architecture, and construction are expected among myriad other topics.
The awards program is being funded by generous grants from the late Leigh Robinson, founder of Express Publishing, author of "Landlording," and NAREE 2011 President and his late wife, Ivy Robinson, as well as Brad Inman, founder of Inman News and NAREE 1992 President; and in-kind donations from the NAREE Board of Directors and Past Presidents.
Submissions must be postmarked by April 15, and received no later than April 20, and should include:
1) Three copies of either the pre-publication version or the publication version of the entire book or e-book CD.
2) Three copies of a maximum of 5,000 words selected from the book by its author, editor, or publisher as representative of the book as a whole. (Please select a key chapter or two.)
3) Application form and entry fee.
Entry fees are $100 for NAREE (2019 dues paid) current members, and $125 for non-members.
Submission Note: No submissions will be returned.
The entire book and the selection of 5,000 words from the book will be sent to a panel(s) of three qualified judges. Judges may read only the 5,000 words or the entire book. Judges score each book on the following five attributes using a scale of 1-100:
• Originality • Readability • Accuracy • Coverage of subject • Scholarship • Design
Highest three accumulated scores win, plus a fourth award will be given for the Best First-time Author.
Each winner is to receive a certificate and cash award as follows:

The Bruss Awards presentation will be a highlight of the Annual NAREE Spring conference, June, 26-29, 2019 in Austin, Texas at the hunt Regency.
The Bruss Awards presentation is only one of the significant events that will be occurring at the NAREE Spring Conference. The conference will feature newsworthy panels, interesting field trips and outstanding networking and professional development opportunities.
Those not present will be mailed awards. Award winners will be posted on www.naree.org and in the NAREE News after the awards banquet.
