NAREE Announces 63rd Annual Real Estate Journalism Competition
New Category for Breaking News Coverage

NAREE's 63rd Annual NAREE Competition is open to Staff Journalists and Freelancers for Daily Newspapers, Weekly Business Newspapers, Trade, Investment and Shelter Magazines, Commercial Real Estate Publications, Wire Services, Television, Radio and Websites

BOCA RATON, Fla.  -- The National Association of Real Estate Editors has announced its 63rd  Annual NAREE Journalism Competition for real estate writers and editors.
For its 63rd competition, NAREE has established a new “breaking news” category to recognize time-sensitive news coverage, representing excellence in responding immediately to a news event.
The deadline for entries is March 1, 2013, for work published or aired in 2012. The competition has 25 categories, including the new breaking news category, best column, best commercial real estate report in a daily newspaper, best blog, best report in a weekly business newspaper, best residential trade magazine, and best web site.
 

The competition is aimed at staff writers, columnists, editors and freelancers covering mortgage finance, foreclosures, commercial and residential real estate, green building, home design and remodeling, and myriad other topics in the broad field of real estate.
 

Gold, Silver and Bronze awards will be given to individual journalists and to teams of journalists.  The Platinum Award of $1,000 will go to the best overall individual entry. Winner of the best freelance collection will receive $500. The Ruth Ryon Best Young Journalist (under age 30) winner and 25 individual category winners will $250 each.
 

All professional journalists, both NAREE members and non-members, may enter. Entry forms are on www.NAREE.org under the "Journalism Contest."
 

Awards will be presented at NAREE's Annual Journalism Conference in Atlanta, Ga. In June 2013. NAREE's annual conference, featuring newsworthy panels and speakers along with the outstanding NAREE University professional development sessions, will draw scores of journalists from around the country.

The competition, now in its sixth decade, recognizes leading journalists from daily metropolitan newspapers; commercial real estate publications; weekly business newspapers; mortgage publications; trade, shelter, business and personal finance magazines; wire services; and broadcast and online news outlets.
 

Founded in 1929, NAREE is a nonprofit professional association of writers, columnists, editors and authors covering residential, commercial and financial real estate and urban and home design.

President’s Award for Best Freelance Collection $500
Freelance journalists who are not full-time staffers, but write for bona fide news media outlets –all media –are eligible for this award.
• Entrant must check the entry form box: "Consider for Best Freelance Collection."
•There is no additional fee to have entries which are already submitted in
categories 1-18 considered for this award.
• If the freelancer has submitted only one story for consideration in only one of
NAREE's 18 individual categories, then two additional freelance pieces must
accompany the entry being considered for an award in NAREE categories 1-18 (at no additional fee) and be labeled: "Two additional writing samples for Best Freelance Collection." Collection must include at least three samples of work in a single .pdf.
 
Ruth Ryon Award for Best Entry by a Young Journalist $250
Work must be entered in one of NAREE's 18 individual categories and must be created by and submitted by individuals 30 years old or younger as of December 31, 2012.
• Entrant must check the entry form box: "Consider for Best Entry by a Young Journalist."
• There is no additional fee to have your entry in the 18 individual categories considered for this award.

Gold, Silver & Bronze Awards
Cash awards of $250 will be awarded for the top entrant in each of the 25 categories.
Gold, Silver and Bronze winners (including each listed team member) will receive award certificates and complimentary admission to the full NAREE Journalism Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.
Judges may also award Honorable Mentions. Those honorees will also receive certificates and complimentary admission to the NAREE conference in Atlanta.
A special Awards Day Program will highlight the NAREE conference’s mix of rich educational and story gathering opportunities.
All winners will be notified in early May so they can make advance travel arrangements to attend either the full NAREE Conference in June 2013 or the Awards Day Program headquartered at the conference hotel in Atlanta.
•Those unable to attend will receive their awards by mail after the awards ceremony.
• A media release naming all award winners will be posted to NAREE Web site, www.naree.org after the awards presentation.

The entry must represent an immediate response to a news event. For a single story or packages including initial online, print or social media coverage and subsequent development of the story. Submissions must indicate how the writer (s) showed enterprise in obtaining and developing the news, and how the report (s) had an impact on real estate markets locally or nationally.
Category 2: Best Investigative Report or Series (Submit Full Package)
Individuals or a team of reporters should submit all parts of the report or series and explain how the writer(s) showed enterprise and how the work had an impact on the community or real estate industry.

ENTRY INSTRUCTIONS
Each completed entry in each category must include:
1. ENTRY FEES
• NAREE Members: First entry is free. Second entry or above is $25 each.
• Non members - $75 processing fee for the first entry. Second entry or above is $25 each.
• Processing fee may be applied to membership dues by checking the appropriate box.
• If one payment is submitted for numerous entries, an itemized tally sheet is required.
• All entries submitted without fees or itemized tally sheet may be disqualified.
2. ENTRY FORM
• Each line must be completed on the form. (Entry may be disqualified if lines are skipped.)
3. SUMMARY
• Attach a brief summary (no more than 150 words) describing the intended audience for the publication, Web site or broadcast.
• Explain why the entry serves the target audience, what is original about the story idea/content, why the reporting is innovative, and if applicable, how a creative risk was taken.
4. ENTRY
• Original tear sheet or photocopy of newspaper and/or magazine article(s), printout of online report, audiocassette, or CD w/protective cases are permitted.
• The publication name and date must be visible on originals and copies of submissions.
• Online and broadcast reports must also show name and date on submission.
• Paper clip entry fee to completed entry form and staple (tape) entry form to upper left-hand corner of entry.
• Do not put entries in binders with plastic sleeves.
• Do not mount articles on cardboard.
• Send entries in 9" by 12" envelopes if possible.
• Best Blog - category #17, or Best Web site Entry - category #25 - Because of the interactive nature of Web sites, jurors will look at the Blog or Web site on a given day during the judging period coupled with home page printouts.
• Judging criteria will include editorial content, design, and ease of use.
• Include the Blog URL or Web address on the summary sheet and application.
5. SPECIAL PACKING REQUIREMENTS, LARGE VOLUME ENTRIES
• Put entries - that may not fit into an envelope - into their own box.
• If submitting multiple entries, make sure they are stapled together w/entry form, not paper-clipped. Use one envelope if possible or shipping boxe(s).

• Winning entries will be displayed at the awards ceremony in Atlanta, Georgia, Spring Conference.

The National Association of Real Estate Editors (NAREE) Journalism Awards Program has recognized excellence in reporting, writing and editing since 1929. Award winning stories and coverage run the gamut from affordable housing, the mortgage crisis, and the business of real estate, to news and trend analysis on government housing policy, the environment, urban growth, land use, investments, green building and home design.

ELIGIBILITY
• Entrants must be journalists - both NAREE active members and non-members. These include newspapers, magazines, Web sites, broadcast programs and newsletters with editorial content not affiliated with, nor subject to, the policies or review of trade associations, special interest groups, and/or advertising departments.
• The work entered must have been published, posted, or aired between Jan 1, 2012 and Dec 31, 2012.
• Competition entry forms must be postmarked on or before March 1, 2013.
• An entrant may submit only one (1) entry per category, but may enter as many categories as he or she chooses after determining eligibility.
• Competition judges reserve the right to decide if an entry is in the proper category, and to move those they determine need reassignment as well as not to make awards in a particular category.
• NAREE reserves the right to cancel a category if fewer than five (5) entries are received in the category.
• Entry fee will be refunded if category is canceled, and entry cannot be reassigned.
• Writers may enter their own work in any category.
• An entry entered in any of the individual categories may also be used as one of the three entries in the best collection of work category.
• Editors may enter their own individually bylined work in any Individual Category and editors may enter the work of their staff writers in any Team Award Category (20-25) under their own membership or processing fee.
• But editors may not enter category 19, "Best Team Report," unless they have a byline on the report.
• At least one bylined team member must be a NAREE member or pay the processing fee to enter work in the "Best Team Report” category.
• Editors also may not use their own membership or processing fee to enter the work of their staffers in the Individual Categories (1-18).
 
JUDGING
• The competition is slated to be judged by journalism faculty of the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University.
• Judges will be the sole arbiters of the awards.
• Judges may choose not to bestow an award in a particular category.
• Judges will consider criteria appropriate to the category including, but not limited to:
• CLARITY OF WRITING
• OBJECTIVITY
• ORIGINALITY
• DEPTH OF REPORTING
• DESIGN (IF APPLICABLE)
• "Best Section," "Best Magazine," "Best Web site," and “Best Newsletter” entries will be judged on overall graphics presentation and use of graphic elements to help communicate the message to the readers.
