NAREE Austin Conference: Learn New Media, Find New Sources

Austin, Texas -- In today’s news business, it’s probably no longer enough merely to write a great story. If posting to the web, blogging, or knowing your way around a video camera aren’t part of a reporter’s daily life now, they soon shall be.

The National Association of Real Estate Editors is offering hands-on tutorials on the aforementioned and other forms of new media at its annual meeting June 2-5 in Austin, Texas. Bring your laptops, cameras, iPhones and any other weapons of mass communications in order to absorb instruction and trouble-shooting tips from Harold Bubil of the Sarasota Herald Tribune and Amy Hoak of Marketwatch.com, who will teach how to master new tech formats and polish the skills of those who are already using them.

Other "new journalism life forms" presenters will include contributors to CultureMap.comTexasTribune.orgDogCanyon.org, and OKCReview.com, four Web-only news sites, who will discuss their strategies for thriving in an emerging marketplace.

"The key to survival is to know how to reinvent yourself," said conference chairman Ralph Bivins,who has covered real estate for more than two decades, first for newspapers including the Houston Chronicle and the San Antonio Express-News and now online for CultureMap.com and his own RealtyNewsReport.com.  "Those on the forefront of real estate's new media will be at NAREE's Austin conference to offer set- by-step instruction to build new skills and to show how they've gone from the big newspaper mentality to the successful entrepreneurial mindset.  I believe their insight will be helpful to both veterans and those new to the profession." Confirmed presenters include: Brad Inman, Inman News and Vook founder and past NAREE president; Evan Smith of the Texas Tribune, Glenn W. Smith of DogCanyon.orgWalt Molony of the National Association of Realtors; and Al Martin of WhatWorks Communications.

In addition to building their tech skills, attendees  of  NAREE's 44th annual Real Estate Journalism Conference can tour trend-setting developments in downtown Austin and the Texas Hill Country and hear from the nation's experts in commercial, residential and financial real estate and green home building and design.

Speakers will include former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Henry Cisneros, who will deliver the keynote speech at 12:45 p.m. Thursday, June 3. At 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, June 2, three leaders in the real estate marketplace will offer their predictions for the business in the coming decade. Benjamin Clark, president of the National Association of Exclusive Buyer Agents and Home Buyer Representation; Pat Lashinsky, president of the ZipRealty online brokerage; and Mary Tennant, president of Keller Williams Realty, will discuss what's on the horizon for the industry as it emerges from the recession.

Conference attendees also will get a close look at the "jingle mail" phenomenon and learn why thousands of homeowners are surrendering to foreclosure and just mailing in their keys to their lenders. On Wednesday, June 2, nationally syndicated columnist Kenneth Harney will moderate a panel on that topic that will include Jack Schakett of the Bank of America, Rick Sharga of the RealtyTrac foreclosure-data firm, and Prof. Brent T. White of the University of Arizona Law School.

Real Estate news making highlights will also include:
· Brian Montgomery, former commissioner of the Federal Housing Administration, will look at how new FHA guidelines may change the rules for home buying;
· Doug Duncan, chief economist for Fannie Mae, and Counselors of Real Estate chairman Arthur Pasquarella of Philadelphia’s BPG Properties will offer their takes on the economy.
· Panelists and presenters will provide the outlook for commercial real estate and the apartment, hotel and vacation-home industries.

On Friday afternoon, NAREE's "Meet the Press" event will offer freelancers and publicists face-to-face mini-meetings with editors and real estate journalists for queries and pitches. Attendees are guaranteed to pick up story ideas and gather news sources that can be called for quotes and information in the future. Winners of NAREE's 60th annual Journalism Awards Competition and the Bruss Real Estate Book Awards Competition are among the top writers expected. NAREE's prestigious awards will be presented June 4, with the book awards banquet at noon and the journalism awards ceremony at 6 p.m.

Register now for the NAREE conference at
